Pacific Rim: Sci-Fi reminiscent of an old genre

Pacific Rim: Great Sci-fi reminiscent of an old genre

Remember those old Japanese monster movies where a giant monster comes out of the ocean and attacks Tokyo? And then they send a robot at it and after a cheesy fighting scene the giant robot slays the monster? Those were pretty awesome. Now imagine smashing the ever popular alien genre into that. That would be pretty awesome right?! Now imagine adding dinosaurs into the mix. Yes. Dinosaurs. Now you have a really awesome movie! Throw in some mind sharing, some companionship, some funny nerds, some tragic life stories, and a girl and you have Pacific Rim.

What is happening is monsters are crossing the inter-universe barrier into the human world. But they aren't just any monsters, they are dinosaurs. And they aren't just any dinosaurs, they are alien dinosaurs. They are called Kaijus. Which is Japanese for “Strange Creature” though the movie defines it as “Giant Monster”. Humanity has such a hard time destroying these things that the U.N. lumps funds together and builds tons of giant robots called Jaegers. They are piloted by two humans who then share a mind and their robot body. These robots beat the alien dinosaur Kaijus to death. They mostly use their fists but at times use ships, swords, missiles, energy cannons, and at one point a pair of flare guns. The Kaijus continue increasing in size and frequency until the Jaegar project is discontinued to put money into building a giant wall around the coasts. (The Kaijus always came through the portal at ocean vents) The giant wall is built and the Jaegars protect what has yet to be walled in. The wall fails horribly. Then some one gets a super bright idea, “What if we just closed the portal?!” This was after years of warring. So they send a nuclear bomb through the portal, kill all the alien creatures (presumably), and everyone gets to go home to whatever is left of their country.
It was a great movie and certainly worth a rent. They are also thinking about a sequel to it that sounds pretty good if it does happen. "Pacific Rim 2: Even Rimmier"
